How necessary is luggage when travelling.?

Difficult to go without any, unless you are a survival specialist. Most people take far too much. I usually travel light, having worked out ways to cut down, like washing & wearing the same shirts, etc. My check-in bag is usually no bigger than most traveller's cabin bags!
