Summer time in New York?

What do most New Yorkers do during the summer time in New York. My cousin told me that most hang out in Manhattan or outside in the other boroughs because they really don't have the opportunity to get out and enjoy the outside during the winter. As a New Yorker, do people who don't live in Manhattan go into areas like SoHo to just walk around or do they go there to shop. Mainly, what do people who live in New York do in the summer time? (Teens and young adults)
